New MB Digital website is CO2 Neutral
Since we launched our new website, a few of you may have spotted the CO2 Neutral Website logo and wondered what that logo and name means in practice. We first learnt about it from Neil Burnett, the designer of our website and someone who is a great advocate for the CO2 Neutral Website scheme.
At MB Digital, we understand the power that’s used every day by digital office machines and we work with our customers to find efficient printers and other energy-saving measures. But the power demands of emails, streaming videos, sharing images and running website servers are a hidden drain on resources and one that we’re keen to address as well.
The CO2 Neutral Website scheme is based in Denmark. We pay a monthly fee that is based on our number of page views. From this, the scheme calculates how much CO2 our website emits including an element for the average consumption of hosting a website, the number of visitors to our site and their behaviour.
That fee is then invested by the scheme into long-term projects to minimise CO2 emissions and support the development of sustainable facilities, such as wind and solar energy plants. Minimising CO2 emissions might mean providing access to clean water in Africa – if communities don’t need to boil their water for it to be safe, that could be a huge CO2 saving. Or it might be more direct investment in wind power in a country like Turkey where the clean energy is used locally.
You can also be reassured that it’s all audited annually by Deloitte and past audits have shown that the projects and investments have actually compensated for closer to 200% of members’ emissions. We may have only just committed to the scheme but we’re keen to spread the word and encourage other businesses to consider taking this small step to make a big difference.
